Students needed to participate/assist on downtown sustainability project

Contact: Gary Ferguson, Ithaca Downtown Alliance, 277-8679 or gary@downtownithaca.com

Ithaca will be hosting a national team compiled by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) who will be conducted a Sustainable Development Assessment Team (SDAT) charette visit September 20-22.

Each year, AIA competitively select 7-8 communities nationwide to undertake SDAT programs. SDAT teams consist or 6-8 national experts from diverse disciplines (design, planning, economics, transportation, just to name a few). Selected communities propose a project for them to tackle during an intense 3-4 day visit, that culminates in a public presentation and the eventual production of a written report to the community.

Ithaca’s project is — “Making Better Connections— Connecting Downtown with Surrounding Commercial Districts”.  We are inviting students to participate in the process by both assisting and observing the team during their three days here in Ithaca.

We have three time slots where students can both assist and/or observe- Tuesday afternoon (9/21), Wednesday morning (9/22) and Wednesday afternoon (9/22). We have room for 2-3 students in each session.

We also invite students and staff to participate in several public sessions:

–          Monday evening 9/20 the team will host a public input session on the topic   from 6-8 at the downtown TC3 Extension Center/M&T Bank Building (6th floor). We encourage students and staff to offer their thoughts and ideas.

–          Wednesday evening 9/22- Public Presentation and Recommendation from the SDAT team— Borg Warner Room at the Tompkins County Public Library 6:30 -7:30 pm; open to all.
