The Student Assembly is Cornell’s governing undergraduate student body, and as a result, we represent all undergraduates affiliated with any and all of the 7 colleges at Cornell. In this past year, the Student Assembly has worked towards improving student health and safety, advocating for transparency during the administration’s decision-making process, and even attempted to settle the dispute around caged vs. cage-free eggs, amongst numerous other initiatives (for more detailed list of our activities check our website, CornellSA.com). If any or all of these initiatives seem interesting or if you just want to meet new people and make a difference to Cornell, then YOU should consider running for a seat on the Student Assembly. Also, if ever you identify an issue on campus you would like to resolve, please don’t hesitate, and contact a Student Assembly member. Currently, we have 4 open seats for Freshmen representatives, 1 open Seat for a Transfer Representative, as well as 2 open College Representative seats (Engineering, and CALS). Additionally, if you’re interested, but cannot find time in your schedule please feel free to join one of our many committees, as they are where our best work is done (for a full list of committees, check CornellSA.com)

According to a joint statement issued by the executive boards of the Asian &Asian American Forum (AAAF), Asian Pacific Americans for Action(APAA), and Cornell Asian Pacific Islander Student Union (CAPSU), the student was subject to racial slurs by four subjects in a vehicle, while he was riding his bicycle. Later, one of the four subjects assaulted the student, while the others watched.

The Student Assembly would like to express our support for the victim of this assault, and wish him a speedy recovery.

Additionally, the Student Assembly would like to express that it does not condone any such behaviour. Both outward racial bias and physical assault on any member of our community are inexcusable.

The Student Assembly would also like to express its support for our student body, and encourage students to approach SA members with any comments, or concerns regarding any issues of bias, violence, and safety on our campus.

I am writing to you as chair of a committee appointed in the fall of 2010 by the Dean of Faculty to consider the advisability of making changes to the Cornell Academic Calendar.

Attached to this message is a pdf that provides some information on the committee and its vision for the process of calendar reform, and outlines the first fruits of the committee’s deliberations, a document titled “Objectives & Principles Guiding the Reexamination of the Academic Calendar”.

These “objectives and principles” are being circulated very broadly for the purpose of eliciting feedback from any and all interested parties, on and beyond the Cornell Ithaca campus. They will be posted at the University Faculty website (http://theuniversityfaculty.cornell.edu/calendar/main.html).
