Potential Hate Crime on our Cornell Campus

The Cornell University Police Department is currently investigating an assault on a graduate student of Asian descent. CUPD has requested the Tompkins County District Attorney’s Office to determine whether the incident meets the legal standards of a Hate Crime

According to a joint statement issued by the executive boards of the Asian &Asian American Forum (AAAF), Asian Pacific Americans for Action(APAA), and Cornell Asian Pacific Islander Student Union (CAPSU), the student was subject to racial slurs by four subjects in a vehicle, while he was riding his bicycle. Later, one of the four subjects assaulted the student, while the others watched.

The Student Assembly would like to express our support for the victim of this assault, and wish him a speedy recovery.

Additionally, the Student Assembly would like to express that it does not condone any such behaviour. Both outward racial bias and physical assault on any member of our community are inexcusable.

The Student Assembly would also like to express its support for our student body, and encourage students to approach SA members with any comments, or concerns regarding any issues of bias, violence, and safety on our campus.
